Nigel Godrich produced, and Jonny Greenwood scored strings and choir for the London Contemporary Orchestra, some of it recorded at a converted farmhouse in Provence. Several songs had existed for years, including one the band had played live since the mid-nineties without ever committing it to tape.

The reception was close to unanimous, and unusually the loudest praise came from writers who had followed the band for twenty years. Grammy nominations followed, and its position in the catalogue has not slipped since.
