Mitchell wrote it while driving back across the United States after leaving the Rolling Thunder tour, and recorded with Larry Carlton and John Guerin among others. Jaco Pastorius was brought in afterward and overdubbed onto four tracks, filling space the arrangements had deliberately left open.

The reception in 1976 was cooler than her earlier records had received, but musicians championed it from the start, and it is now routinely named her most harmonically adventurous album.
